Grandma’s Wisdom: Life Lessons on What Truly Matters 👵

“Don’t sweat the small stuff,” my grandma once told me, “Just enjoy the fact that we are here together and that we love each other.” Her words, spoken on a hectic evening years ago, have become a guiding principle in my life. As I navigate the complexities of work, family, and everyday responsibilities, I often find myself returning to her simple yet profound wisdom. Life, as I’m continually reminded, is too short to waste on anything but what truly matters.

And what does truly matter? Here are a few life lessons I’ve learned along the way:

1. Choose Your Circle Wisely: Life’s too short to spend it with people who bring you down. Surround yourself with those who build you up, support you, and make you laugh until your sides ache – luckily I have friends and co-workers like this. 🥰

2. Embrace Your Authentic Self: If you know me at all, you know I’m not one to shy away from being myself. Life’s too short to pretend to be someone you’re not. Embrace your quirks, your passions, and your unique perspective. The world needs your authentic self – YOU do YOU! 😎

3. Prioritize Self-Care: In the midst of taking care of everyone else, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Whether it’s a massage, a walk in nature, a weekend getaway , dinner with the girls, make time for rejuvenation. You work hard and deserve it. 💆 🚗 🍽️

4. Find Joy in Your Work: If you work 45 hours per week, you spend 27% of your time working, make sure you’re spending that time doing something you enjoy, with people you like. Life’s too short to dread Mondays.

5. Be Present with Your Loved Ones: In my previous post about the importance of being present, I talked about how easy it is to get distracted by our phones, our to-do lists, and the constant stream of information vying for our attention. But life’s too short to miss out on those precious moments with our families. Make time to truly be with them, engaged in their conversations, and present in their lives. 👩‍👩‍👦‍👦

My grandma’s words that evening were a gentle reminder to shift my focus from the overwhelming to-do list to the precious present moment. It’s a lesson I strive to live by every day. Life is too short to let the small stuff overshadow the joy of connection and the love we share with those around us. ❤️

(Below is a picture of my grandma’s last Christmas with us. As I look back at the photos, I’m reminded of the importance of cherishing every moment. I’m sharing her wisdom with my daughters, hoping they will carry it forward and live their lives to the fullest.)
